Chapter Sixteen
âLathan!â Graylan bellowed.
Lathan did not understand the sudden torment ripping through him as he dropped to his knees until he looked up and saw Mirranda with her crystals in her hand.
âBetrayal!â Aro roared. âWidar seeks to either kill her or send her back to her own time.â
He felt her terror. The void trying to pull her in, trying to rip her apart.
âNay!â he cried, but he could not move. Blood dripped from Mirrandaâs nose at the same time it spattered onto the floor from his.
Her form wavered, a spark of a roaming gate around her, her face terribly gray. He knew she could not moveâshe could not rid herself of the crystals.
Graylan seized Widar Breollâs shoulders. âTraitorous bitch!â
Gideon stepped up and struck Mirrandaâs hand, knocking the crystals away. They scattered across the marble floor, but to Lathanâs horror, their colors did not fade. They were still active. Cerwin cried Mirrandaâs name, gripping her shoulders, trying to hold her to this realm.
âGet the crystals!â Lathan cried. âPut them in the pouch.â He hit the ground, writhing in pain. Only then did he see a roaming gate trying to form around him as well. Ancients have mercy, Widar would kill them both. Mirranda could not direct herself through the void with him as an added burden. They would both die.
Widar Breoll fought against Graylan, snarling, her eyes flashing in amber fury. But Graylanâs grip could not be broken. He spared one hand to snatch the pouch from her fingers and tossed it to Gideon. âQuickly!â
Gideon searched for the crystals. Lathanâs mother held Mirrandaâs arms. âGirls, help him!â she ordered Lathanâs sisters. They moved, albeit reluctantly.
Lathan reached for Mirranda, but he was too far away. âStay with me, Mirra,â he snarled in agony. âConcentrate.â
He felt her suffering increase, stretching and pulling at the core of her being. Blood leaked faster from his nose. Only now did he truly understand her terror of the void.
âStay with me, Mirra. Focus on me!â
The torment within her grew. Her mouth moved, forming his name, but no sound emerged. Again, her form wavered, and for a heartbeat, Lathan could not see her.
âNay! Mirra, donât leave me.â He lunged forward, trying to reach her, willing her not to vanish.
âI have them!â Gideon shoved the crystals into the pouch and tied it closed.
Mirranda crashed to the ground, gasping for breath. The roaming gate behind her disappeared, as did the one trying to form around him.
René grabbed his arm and helped him to Mirrandaâs side. Lathan knelt and pulled her against his chest. âAncients have mercy,â Lathan whispered, crushing her against him.
An agonized moan ripped through her. Lathan continued to hold Mirranda, trying to soothe her, feeling their shared torment ease. His heart slammed against his ribs. He had almost lost her. What would have happened if the roaming gate had fully formed? He glared at Widar, who continued to struggle against Graylanâs iron grip. Blood still leaked from his nose, and he saw the councilors staring at him in shock.
